How to choose a portable power chair
The lightest chair isn’t always the right one. These are the questions we go through with every client.
Who’s lifting it?
Check the weight of the heaviest piece, not just the total. Folding chairs lift in one go, while take-apart chairs lift in several lighter pieces.
Rider weight & seat width
Leave some headroom on weight capacity. If you’re over 300 lbs, look at the CITY 2 PLUS (400 lbs) or EZee Life 4G (500 lbs).
Where you’ll drive it
Small wheels suit malls, ships and airports. For grass, gravel or long daily use, a full-size power chair is usually the better choice.
Primary or travel chair?
Portable chairs have little seating support. If you need tilt, custom seating or positioning, see our complex rehab chairs and keep a portable chair for trips.

Can I take a folding power wheelchair on a plane?
Usually, yes. US airlines follow FAA and DOT rules for mobility devices with lithium batteries, and the battery’s watt-hour (Wh) rating decides how it travels. Many of the chairs above use a removable lithium-ion battery that the manufacturer describes as airline-compliant. Always call your airline at least 48 hours before you fly and carry the battery spec sheet.
What is the lightest power wheelchair you carry?
The MOVO Cloud Carbon X5 is listed at about 30.5 lbs with its battery. The Quickie Q50 R Carbon, TravelBuggy AEROLUX 2 and Golden Cricket are also among the lightest, at 32–33 lbs without the battery.
Does Medicare cover a portable power wheelchair?
Generally not when it’s meant as a travel chair or a second chair. Medicare power-mobility coverage is based on documented need inside the home. If you need a primary power chair, start with a complex rehab evaluation.
Is a folding power chair good as my only wheelchair?
For some people, yes, especially for light daily use on flat ground. If you sit in your chair all day, need postural support, or drive on rough terrain, a full-size power chair is usually a better primary chair.
What if I weigh more than 300 lbs?
