Slings

Patient Slings

Slings are the component that actually carries the person during a lift transfer. Choosing the right style, size, and weight rating matters as much as choosing the lift itself.

Sling Types

  • Universal / full-body slings — general transfers for users with limited trunk control
  • Toileting and hygiene slings — open design allowing clothing management and commode access
  • Bathing slings — mesh construction that drains and dries quickly
  • Standing / transfer slings — for use with sit-to-stand lifts, where the user bears some weight
  • Repositioning slings — for moving a user up in bed rather than transferring out of it

Compatibility and Sizing

Slings are not universal despite the name. Each is rated for a maximum weight and designed for a particular attachment system — loop, clip, or bar — and a sling from one manufacturer may not attach safely to another maker’s lift. Confirm both the attachment type and the weight rating before ordering.

Size matters just as much: a sling that is too large allows the user to slide within it, and one that is too small creates pressure at the thighs and shoulders. Sizing is based on the user’s weight and torso dimensions, not clothing size.

Inspection and Replacement

Inspect slings before each use for fraying, stretched loops, worn stitching, and any illegible label — an unreadable weight rating means the sling should be retired. Follow the manufacturer’s laundering instructions, since repeated high-heat washing degrades fabric strength over time.

Contact us if you’re unsure which sling fits your lift or how to size one correctly, and see our patient lifts if you need a complete transfer setup.
